Cambridge
Interesting piece on the Today program this morning about Cambridge council buying one way tickets to other towns for their homeless people. The presenter introduced the piece as saying that the the other towns were unhappy and implying that Cambridge was just moving the problem onto other town. Then the guest came on. She was the executive of Cambridge council and corrected him! Basically, she was saying that Cambridge only pay for a ticket when they have verified that there is a bed at the other end and that the person is happy with going.
Seems quite reasonable to me and certainly took the wind out of the presenter's sails! Commentsstacia wrote:

Stacia,
What you are saying directly contradicts what the chief bod at Cambridge council said. She categorily stated that they ensure that there is a bed for the person. If they are not doing that then Cambridge Council should be rightly condemned. As for the Today interviewer, clearly he had a line of questioning which didn't allow for the answers given. Also clearly, they hadn't researched properly otherwise they would have checked what happens to people at the other end of the train line.

it seems "reasonable" to you that cambridge city council moves on homeless people to cities like norwich (where i live, and where the numbers of people sleeping rough has increased by more than 250 per cent in the past year)
and peterborough?
there are no free beds in norwich for the homeless. i regularly interview homeless people who have been moved on from cambridge and have arrived to find there is no help and no shelter for them here. possibly cambridge city council is ensuring there is a space for the homeless people they offer one-way tickets to at one of our fine car parks, bus shelters or doorways.
the today interviewer had the "wind taken out of their sails" because they had the interviewing prowess of a snail. john humphrys would have torn the CCC representative to pieces, and rightfully so.
it's another case of "not in our backyard" with not a thought for the people being shunted from pillar to post. still, as long as cambridge's tourism business doesn't suffer and the CCC housing department can claim its homelessness figures have dropped, i don't suppose anyone at the council gives a monkey's.
sorry, have now jumped off the bandwagon.
